SOLID WOOD FURNITURE ARE THE MOST APPRECIATED

Durmast or walnut wood used to manufacture solid wood furniture is one of the best solutions the market can offer. The wood of oaks and walnut trees has an intrinsic value that makes it a raw material with an unquestionable value. Every wood can be treated, cut, assembled, and fixed to look at top of its possibilities, while durmast and walnut wood do not need many treatments. They can be kept natural, since they are enduring types of wood, resistant to the attack of parasites, solid, with a great tolerance against humidity. Moreover, these types of wood withstand scratches, blows and bending. This is the reason why solid durmast or walnut wood furnishings are the most appreciated. With a single trunk many boards can be obtained, through which later different items can be realized. The result is always astonishing: a unique and universally recognized beautiful object.

FEATURES OF SOLID DURMAST WOOD

READ THE WOOD SCRATCHES: handbook to understand the natural variations on solid wood surfaces

All our tables are realized with solid boards used in a way that the natural aesthetic characteristics are enhanced.

For this reason, every single item of Altacorte will be unique and different from the others (photos in the catalogues and expositions in the shops included).

Hereafter we describe some aesthetic aspects, proofs of the natural characteristics of durmast solid wood, that can be found in all our creations.

PINWORM HOLES

It is the presence of small holes, that differ in terms of quantity, size, and shape. These holes are not caused by woodworms but by an insect that makes holes in the tree while it is still alive or it died recently, and the sapwood is still sweet. Our boards are selected, controlled, and guaranteed: there is no presence of any organisms that can damage wood. The wholes are randomly and not uniformly distributed, and this is a sign of the naturalness of solid wood.

CLEFTS

Small clefts that may be observed are due to the natural movement of the wood.

FLAMES, KNOTS AND DIFFERENCES IN TONES

We guarantee the use of European oak for our products, whose value and uniqueness lie in the presence of flames, knots and differences in tones. Knots may be filled in with stucco or left as they are, the right decision will be taken when the finish is going to be applied. Some small cracks can appear over time. This characteristic does not threaten the product quality and duration.

IRREGULAR EDGE

Irregular edges depend on the perimeter of the tree trunk and give each plank a unique and unrepeatable shape and colour. Irregular edges cannot be altered, and this gives rise to shapes that are always different, together with very variable shades of colour.

ACCIDENTAL CRACKS AND MIRRORINGS

These types of cracks are non-predictable tiny cracks, created by the by-hand planing of the surface (see the 2 photos above)
The mirrorings are streaks in which the wood appears much shinier (see the 2 photos below)

TANNIN

This is a polyphenolic compound present in nature and also contained in oak wood. The presence of this substance may cause changes in the colour of the surface of solid wood tops. These are neither stains nor rings.

“BUTTERFLY” ENGRAVINGS AND WOODEN DOWELS

Some tops are decorated with “butterfly” engravings and wooden dowels. These embellishments can be more or less visible. The difference depends on two very important factors. The grain of the materials used, and the finish requested. At random, each different finish may conceal or highlight the wood grain.

These differences cannot become grounds for disputes, instead they must be considered as values, since they are intrinsic characteristics of the solid durmast wood.
